Conclusion

At the outset of Jesus’s ministry, he is proclaimed the sacrificial Lamb of God, introducing a theme that is maintained and developed throughout John’s Gospel. At several significant junctures in the ministry of Jesus, the author reaffirms Jesus’s role as Passover victim. Then at the climactic events leading up to and including his death, the Gospel author brings the Passion Narrative to a close by citing in double, emphatic fashion OT quotations that make the sacrificial Passover death not only specific but also virtually undeniable. This particular double formulaic quotation not only brings the Passover theme to its fitting conclusion; it also brings the series of OT quotations by the author of John’s Gospel to an end, both of them occurring at the death of Jesus. The quotations in John 19:36 and 37 are therefore to be recognized as final fulfillment statements, bringing the entire course of plot development to a close. A primary motivation for the action of the story is Jesus’s death as a substitute and replacement for the Passover sacrifice, seen in his fulfilling various features of that sacrifice. And the author of John’s Gospel has conveyed this theme through the use of quotations, allusions, and even echoes from various Passover passages in Sacred Scripture.
